Beaming With Success (MKS Ceiling- Matthew Seaman)

“My advice to anyone wanting to start up their own business is to call the Business Foundations. There is so much to learn in business, and they are more than happy to teach you,” said Matthew.

After completing an apprenticeship in wall and ceiling fixing in 2009, and then working in the industry for someone else, Matthew decided that he wanted to go out on his own and set up a successful ceiling company.

A friend of Matthews had completed the NEIS programme, and suggested that he go through the Business Foundations to learn about setting up a business.

“My friend gave me enough information to get in contact with the Business Foundations, which allowed me to secure my spot in the Micro Business Operations Certificate in 2010,” said Matthew.

“I already had the knowledge of the trade, but had no experience running a business. The NEIS programme really opened my eyes to a whole new world. I was quite surprised at how much I learned in only five weeks,” said Matthew.

“I learned about financial record keeping, market research and business planning. I also learned about business legalities relevant to my business, and how to market and advertise my business through many different avenues,” Matthew said.

“Since completing the course, I have hit the ground running. The course helped me to set up every aspect of my business. My mentor was always very helpful in explaining anything that I didn’t understand,” said Matthew.

As Matthew points out, there are always slow times in business, but he has learned to save money through the peak periods.

The business has been running smoothly for Matthew, and in the last six months he has been subcontracting to four different contractors.

Although this keeps Matthew very busy, he continues to strive for bigger and brighter aspirations.

“My goal is to eventually contract to Home Builders and employ my own staff,” said Matthew.

“My advice to anyone wanting to start up their own business is to call the Business Foundations. There is so much to learn in business, and they are more than happy to teach you,” said Matthew.
