After fruitlessly trying to find work as an animator, Dean Carnemolla realised that it was going to be a tough market to enter into. Refusing to give up and still wanting to stay in touch with networks within the industry, he decided to look for gaps he could capitalise on within the marketplace.
What Dean found was a shortage of good framers and a lack of gallery space for up and coming artists. This inspired Dean to set up his own business the Hole in the Wall, which is a gallery space that also provides framing services. Equipped only with an idea, a lot of determination and the desire to be his own boss, Dean knew that he needed business start up advice.
Dean was told about the NEIS programme through a friend who had completed the course, and encouraged him to apply. “The course put everything into perspective, including all the pro’s and con’s of business operations,” said Dean.
Since opening the Hole in the Wall, Dean has had to overcome financial obstacles. “Money was hard to come by especially in the first six months, but the NEIS payments helped support my business in the initial stages,” Dean said.
Through strategic marketing and networking, Dean has been able to establish a firm client database and strong business relationships. Dean’s natural charisma mixed with a passion for art and a genuine desire to help other artists has allowed him to build a solid business foundation.
Dean was recently nominated for Fremantle Young Entrepreneur which is not only encouraging for him, but also a very good indication of where this business is headed.
“A lot of people talk about doing it (business) but few try, get the support from through the NEIS programme and go for it,” said Dean
He is now working towards releasing his own brand of shirts, prints and zines which he hopes will create more substance for the Hole in the Wall brand, so watch this space.
